Our History

Built in 1917 by Clyde L. Davis, the building is a Colonial Revival with a gambrel roof, shed dormer and a classical center bay entrance. In 1918, the house was purchased by Miss May (Mary) Chapman for a school. The learning method for the school was modeled after the Lincoln School in New York City, a training school for Columbia University Teachers College. Miss Chapman returned annually to Columbia to update herself on the latest teaching and learning methods. The school was highly regarded and graduates attended colleges and universites including Harvard, Princeton and Yale.

We stayed at Kismet Cottage for a special occasion and could not have been happier with the space and location. Our group felt the house was even better than the photos in the listing portrayed. The house was spotless, the linens were luxurious, everything was set up for groups, anyway we needed was available, and everything in town/at the Carolina was walkable from the house. There are not enough positive things to say about our experience at Kismet Cottage. We hope to be back!

Our family enjoyed our stay at Kismet Cottage. The location is perfect to walk to the village and enjoy the restaurants and coffee shop! We were here for a wedding and having a nice big place for so many family members to be together was perfect! Sandra was so helpful answering all of my many questions!! The house is well stocked, we had everything we needed and more!! We would definitely come back and stay again!

Three couples stayed in the house. It was a great location, well stocked and very clean. Sandra was very responsive to any questions I had. I would recommend it for anyone who is looking to stay in the Pinehurst area.

Our group really enjoyed the house, especially the location, the kitchen, TVs throughout and the billiard room.
